About Your Hosts

Picture
Rebecca Lindell has spent decades telling other people's stories — first as an underpaid editorial assistant in the New York City book publishing world, and then as an underpaid reporter at newspapers around the Midwest. More recently, she worked as a somewhat-better-paid communications professional in higher education. Now she's a freelance writer telling stories of her own — and teaching others the art of storytelling through the written word. She particularly enjoys working with college-bound high school seniors panicking over their application essays. She loves showing them that they, too, have funny, compelling, heartbreaking and inspiring stories to tell. Rebecca's second-favorite thing to do after storytelling is hiking. She's hiked in 30 of the 50 U.S. states, and last year accomplished one of her life's dreams: walking the 500 miles of the Camino de Santiago in Spain.

Monica Matsakis believes that “The unexamined life is not worth living” (Socrates), though she admits she probably thinks too much. Writing, sharing stories, and encouraging others to do the same helps her make sense of it all without completely losing it. She is an instructor at the Laughing Academy in Glenview, where she facilitates storytelling workshops and is continually inspired by the stories she hears and the people she meets. Monica is a mom to two brilliant kids, Henry and Elias, and is married to Chris Matsakis, an entrepreneur and inventor. Together, they are launching Novelty Genius, a new business venture offering custom t-shirts, mugs, and totes for businesses and events. If you need something like that, get in touch. She's obviously not above a shameless plug or two. Monica has performed stories across the city and suburbs, including at Story Lab, This Much Is True, Keep Coming Back, First Person Live, The Moth, and the Laughing Academy, among others, and she’s thrilled to be hosting a Do Not Submit and excited to see what unfolds.
